Jensen Notches All-American Honors at NCAA Championships
March 15, 2014
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- Curt Jensen captures Illinois State's second All-American honor of the weekend, placing eighth in the men's shot put with a throw of 19.35m (63-06.00) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Jensen continued to improve with each throw in the preliminary round of the Championships, opening up with a toss of 19.03m (62-05.25) and finishing the third round with a heave of 19.32m (63-04.75) to advance him to the final three rounds. However, the senior tossed his best mark of the day in the fourth round, throwing 19.35m (63-06.00), which earned him an eighth-place overall finish and the first All-American accolades of his career.
"Curt didn't have his best stuff today, but nevertheless it was a very tough competition," head coach Elvis Forde said. "It was the very first time he competed at national meet, and he became an All-American. Hopefully this serves as motivation for outdoors. The level of competition was world class, and most importantly he got to experience it. What you do over the course of the year matters, but everybody comes with same expectation to nationals and that is to become an All-American, which he achieved that status. He will be remembered as that at ISU. There is no reason for disappointment. Coach Bennett has done fantastic job with these two (Akil Mills) throwers, and both of them can build on this success heading into outdoors. Again, congrats to Curt and Akil, and there is more in the tank for these two."
Ryan Crouser of Texas won the men's shot put competition with a heave of 21.21m (69-07.00), and Stephen Mozia of Cornell finished second with a mark of 20.06m (65-09.75).
Jensen concluded his indoor season with seven top-three finishes, including five first-place finishes and four Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week nods. Along with a spectacular 2013-14 indoor campaign, the Colona, Ill., native broke the ISU school record in the shot put with a throw of 20.29m (66-07.00) at the Eastern Illinois Early Bird Invite (Dec. 6).
The Redbird track and field teams will open up the outdoor season March 28-29, as they travel to Carbondale, Ill., for the Saluki Invitational.
