ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.Akil Mills earns the first All-American honors of his career, placing sixth in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 21.66m (71-00.75) in the fifth-round at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

After the preliminary rounds, Mills sat in eighth-place with a throw of 21.00 (68-10.75). With the first throw of the final rounds, the Loganville, Ga., native tossed a personal-best mark of 21.26m (69-09.00) and would continue to move up the leaderboard. In the fifth round of competition, Mills tossed his career-best mark of 21.66m, solidifying a sixth-place finish and All-American accolades. The senior thrower’s last appearance at the NCAA Championships resulted in a 12th-place finish overall.

“I am extremely happy and excited for Akil,” head track and field coach Elvis Forde said. “He was in eighth headed into the final round, and for the first time threw over 70-feet to earn a personal-best mark and finished in sixth. He also earned the first All-American honors of his career, which is something special. Today, he was ready for competition. He worked hard, and it showed. The rest is history, and he will be in the Redbird history books forever. Coach Bennett did a fantastic job, and I am just very happy for the both of them. Today was all about Akil, and I know sometimes he is very quiet, but with a sixth-place finish, he was all smiles.”

Mills outdid his former career-best of 21.23 (69-08.00) set at the Don Kirby Elite meet Feb. 7. He concluded the 2013-14 indoor campaign with seven top-three finishes, including four first-place finishes and the coveted title of Missouri Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year, tossing a mark of 21.19m (69-06.25) at the Valley Championships.
