Feb. 22, 2008
CHARLESTON, Ill. - Illinois State Freshman Drew Holl and senior Alex Straughn both won their respective events in the high jump and triple jump, while freshman Sonja Zoric placed second in the shot put to highlight the Redbird track and field team's performance at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special inside the Lantz Fieldhouse.
Holl's high jump of 6 feet, 10.25 inches exceeds his previous height of 6-09 by one inch, while Straughn's season-best triple jump of 49-11.50 should set him at the top of the conference. Zoric's throw of 45-01.50 feet eclipses her previous mark by one and a half feet. Zoric also placed eighth in the weight throw launching a distance of 50-07.25.
Head track and field coach Elvis Forde was pleased with Holl and Straughn's performances and hopes that their efforts will carry over into the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships next weekend (March 1-2 in Cedar Falls).
"Drew has been coming along really well all season it was just a matter of time before he really started to perform," said Forde. "He is very consistent and I hope that he can build on this performance so he is ready for the conference meet next weekend.
"We have high expectations for Alex. He has become very confident and even though he has not competed very much in the triple jump this season he was still able to produce and that will be key for us."
Senior Frannie Epps, a multi-event track and field athlete, also had a strong performance for the Redbirds as she achieved two season-best performances. In the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles the Gibson City, Ill., native recorded a time of 8.90 sec., to qualify for the finals where she placed 10th. She later placed 11th in the high jump recording a height of 4-11.
In the women's track events, freshman Sarah Glowacki finished second in the mile with a personal-best time of 5:13.98, while teammate junior Kathleen Thompson finished just behind her for a third-place finish with a season-best 5:18.90.
On the men's side, senior Ryan Lay ran a personal-best in the 3,000-meter run recording a time 9:09.54 to place 12th. In the field, freshman Nick Chumbley and senior Colin Fane had personal-best efforts in the shot put throwing 50-10 and 49-07.25 to place sixth and seventh, respectively. Freshman Danny Lindsey recorded a personal-best in the weight throw (43-03.00) and finished 17th overall.
The Illinois State men's and women's track and field teams head to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships next weekend, March 1-2 to compete for the conference title inside the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
