Zillmer Runs to School-Record at Meyo Invitational
Feb. 7, 2014
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Kristen Zillmer captured the Illinois State women's 1,000-meter indoor record this Friday evening at the Loftus Center at the Meyo Invitational with a time of 2:50.41, besting the former record set by Rosalind Cassidy in 1987 who ran for a time of a 2:50.93.
Zillmer notched a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter race with her personal-best run, two seconds behind first-place Danielle Aragon of Notre Dame. The Park Ridge, Ill., native looks to continue her success tomorrow as she competes in the 800-meter run.
"Kristen has been running very well, so that is expected of her," head coach Elvis Forde said. "The bottom line is she was able to knock that record off, and the funny thing about it is it's an event she has not run in a while. It was a challenge, not only because it was something new, but because it was an honest race. A school record is a school record, which makes it more special."
On the men's side, Sean Senf ran a personal-best 5,000-meter time of 14:41.81, beating his former career-best by seven seconds. Senf finished 18th in a field of 39, with Tyler Morse not far behind him, placing 24th. Morse also notched a season-best time of 14:51.08 in the 5K.
Chase Pavelonis and Cirron Clark both vaulted past the first two rounds of the pole vault competition, but did not clear the 4.85m (15-11.00) mark. Clark earned a season-best height of 4.70m (15-05.00) to place sixth, while Pavelonis finished in a tie for third, clearing 4.70m on his second attempt.
"Chase and Cirron didn't get to the 16-foot mark, but Cirron looked very good over a couple of the bars he attempted," Forde said. "I was impressed with him because it was only his second time representing the University, and it was nice to see what he looks like. It was also a chance to see what he is capable of with some of the attempts he had."
Shandel Ellis finished 19th in a field of 52 of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.72, narrowly missing the semifinals of the race.
The Redbirds will be back in action tomorrow, with events beginning at 10 a.m. EST.
