Article I
Name
The name of this organization shall be the Varsity-I
Club of the Illinois State University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics (hereinafter referred to as VIC).
Article II
Purpose
The purposes of the VIC shall be to:
A. Foster a closer association among all former athletes and staff
who have represented Illinois State University in intercollegiate
athletics;
B. Provide opportunities for fellowship for VIC members through
a variety of appropriate activities;
C. Recognize and honor former Redbird student-athletes, teams
and athletics staff for significant performances;
D. Be of service to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
and current student-athletes at Illinois State University consistent
with policies of Illinois State University, the Gateway and Missouri
Valley Conferences and the National Collegiate Athletic Association;
E. Maintain, strengthen and promote the tradition, ideals, and
spirit of Illinois State athletics.
Article III
Membership
A. All former letterwinners that can be reasonably
substantiated through records, understanding records prior to
the 1980's may not be accurate, shall be active members. Female
athletes prior to the 1980's when letters were first awarded to
women shall be "grandmothered" as letterwinners. Only
letterwinners may serve as officers of the organization.
B. Former coaches, administrators, trainers, non-lettering athletes
and managers shall be considered associate members.
C. The VIC may grant honorary membership to other persons upon
a majority vote of the Advisory Board (hereinafter referred to
as the "Board"). All persons who have been selected
honorary members shall always be considered a member in good standing.
Article IV
Officers
A. The officers of the VIC shall consist of a President,
a Vice President, a Secretary, and a Past President. The aforementioned
officers with an appointed representative from the Athletics Department
will constitute the Executive Committee. This body will act on
behalf of the Board between official meetings;
B. Any former letterwinner shall be eligible to hold office in
the VIC. All officers shall be elected annually and shall serve
for a period of two years. No officer shall be eligible to hold
the same office for more than two consecutive terms. Such officers
shall assume office at the spring semester meeting;
C. President: the President shall preside at all general meetings
of the VIC and its Advisory Board. He or she shall serve as president
for a two (2) year term;
D. Vice-President: the Vice-President shall automatically succeed
to the office of President upon the President's completion of
his or her term. The Vice-President shall preside in the absence
of the President with equal authority;
E. Secretary: the Secretary shall assist with minutes at each
VIC Board meeting if necessary, and may also assist with VIC mailings;
F. Past President: the Past President shall remain an officer
of the VIC and its Executive Committee for two years after his
or her term as President and shall assist in fund raising.
G. Nominations for the aforementioned officers shall come from
the Board and be elected by a majority vote of the Board at the
spring meeting. The position of Vice-President shall be elected
in odd number years beginning in 2001, and the position of Secretary
shall be elected in even numbered years beginning in 2004. The
initial year, the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Past
President shall all be elected in April 2001. The first Secretary
shall serve a three-year term until spring 2004, at which time
the term of the next Secretary shall be a 2 year term as described
in the Bylaws.
Article V
Advisory Board
A. The business and affairs of the VIC shall be directed
by an Advisory Board;
B. The Advisory Board shall be composed of members of the VIC
nominated by the VIC officers with input from current Board members;
C. The new members of the Board shall be elected by majority vote
of the current Board at the spring meeting;
D. An attempt shall be made to have two representatives from each
sport that has been or currently is in the Illinois State University
athletics program. Officers may represent their sport;
E. Initially, half of the Board will serve two year terms and
half will serve three year terms to be determined by the draw
from a hat, never allowing two representatives from the same sport
to rotate off the Board the same year. Thereafter, all representatives
to the Board will serve two year terms. Members of the Board may
be re-elected;
F. The Board will meet with the officers twice annually, on the
second Wednesday of April and September;
G. The President shall appoint a replacement in the event a Board
member is unable to complete his or her term.
Article VI
Executive Director
The Athletics Director at Illinois State University
shall serve as Executive Director of the VIC. The Athletics Director
may direct an employee of the athletics department to act on his/her
behalf to receive money, pay for expenses, execute checks, publish
the Newsletter, and other necessary duties.
Article VII
Amendments
Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members
of the Board present at any meeting of the Advisory Board, or
at any special meeting called for that purpose, provided that
notice of the proposed amendment be given to each member of the
Board by mail not less than ten (10) days prior to the date of
