Junior Kevin Dubler broke the single-season doubles record, while senior Kyle Cherney hit his fifth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough. The Illinois State baseball team (22-27) fell in 10 innings, 5-4, to Western Michigan in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon at Hyames Field. The Redbirds played their second-straight extra-inning affair, and dropped to 3-3 on the year when playing extra innings.
The Illinois State baseball team will finish its 2008 regular season this week on the road, beginning Tuesday with a non-conference game at Western Michigan at 2 p.m. CST. The Redbirds (22-26, 6-15) will then travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to play Indiana State in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. CST.
The Illinois State Athletics Department will conduct a two-week online season ticket reward drawing, beginning May 12, for patrons who order 2008 volleyball season tickets on GoRedbirds.com.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, senior Kyle Cherney delivered a single down the right field line to give the Illinois State baseball team a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over in-state rival Southern Illinois in the night cap of a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday at Duffy Bass Field. Cherney's game-winning hit salved a split with SIU in Saturday's doubleheader and kept alive the Redbirds' chances to qualify for the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
