June 11, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - Continuing a trend of stellar academic performance to go along with an outstanding athletic year, the Illinois State Athletics Department posted a 3.11 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in the Spring 2010 semester. The Redbirds achieved a department GPA above 3.0 for the fourth-consecutive semester.
The Redbirds' mark of 3.11 was the second-highest in school history, falling just short of tying the school record of 3.13 for a third-straight semester. Additionally, 241 student-athletes were named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll, achieving a GPA above 3.20, and 48 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
The men's and women's programs nearly surpassed their own GPA records that both set in each of the last two semesters. ISU's seven men's teams posted a 2.90 GPA, coming just short of the 2.94 record, and the 10 women's teams combined for 3.31 GPA, nearly equaling the record of 3.32.
The highest men's GPA was achieved by the tennis team, who posted a 3.35. The highest women's GPA went to the golf team with a 3.55. The women's soccer team achieved a personal record GPA with a 3.43.
Even after surpassing 2,000 hours of community service for the fifth-consecutive year with their efforts in the fall semester alone, the Redbirds continued to make community service a priority with 1,219 hours in the spring semester. For the 2009-10 academic year, the Redbirds contributed a school record 3,600 hours of community service.
